Alex Mayger - Southdowns Motorhome Centre

Meet Our Newest Member Of The Family

Our team has expanded! Over the summer we took on a new employee. Meet Alex, he is currently at the University of Exeter and doing his ‘sandwich year’ with us working in our Marketing Department. Alex has been with us a few months now but has settled in quickly and we see him as one of the family, you won’t directly interact with Alex but you might see him about at our Showroom in Portsmouth, Hampshire.

We interviewed Alex recently so you can get a sense of what some of our employees are like and what makes our team at Southdowns Motorhome Centre unique.

How did you find yourself working for Southdowns Motorhome Centre?

I was in the process of looking for a placement job as part of my university degree. My parents had mentioned this to Andrew (one of the directors at the company), as they are friends from Felpham Sailing Club. He had suggested the idea of doing some work for him over the summer. After some consideration, I decided to take this offer as it would allow me to work without having to relocate. Before I started I asked whether it would be possible to work at Southdowns for the whole year as part of my degree, rather than just over the summer. This went ahead and I am now a few months into my placement with Southdowns Motorhomes.

What is your job title here?

Marketing Assistant

What does your job as a Marketing Assistant, involve?

This role involves ensuring that our website listings look as good as possible. This means getting pictures for every vehicle we have in stock and creating the image galleries for them. Writing the descriptions based on spec sheets from the sales team is also required. Social media is also something I enjoy doing and it is a great way to engage with our customers.

What is the best thing about working for Southdowns Motorhome Centre?

The best thing about working for Southdowns is the amount of knowledge the entire team has. I have learnt a huge amount from my colleagues, and they are always willing to answer the questions I have… (there is a lot of them). Everyone is very open and discussions on how to improve are always being had. It’s great being in an environment that is motivated to achieve.

Do you have a personal interest in motorhomes?

I have had very little experience with motorhomes, so there has been a learning curve in getting to know the industry. My parents have looked at getting a motorhome many times but never pulled the trigger on it. However, now that I’m more familiar with them I am always looking for ones that my parents would enjoy. While I haven’t had any prior experience with motorhomes, I have learned so much about them in a short space of time. Our team has years of experience and so I have tried to soak up as much knowledge as I can. It has made me much more interested in motorhomes and I would love to use one in the future.

If you could take a motorhome anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would take a motorhome to Italy. I have been a number of times and love the country. Getting to experience it with the benefits and freedom of a motorhome would be great.

If you could fulfil one ambition in your life, what would it be and why?

Currently, it would be to get a first-class degree. After that, it would be to own a Tesla. In fact, maybe it is the other way around!
