On the 11th of March, the new budget was released. It included a reversion of the motorhome VED tax increase that was introduced in September 2019. Click Here to read about the tax increase back when it happened. It saw a 700% on the VED paid for a brand new motorhome, from £265 to £2135. This had negative impacts on the motorhome and tourism industry, putting many jobs at risk. Also, the tax increase actually caused the opposite of its intended effects. While newer motorhomes with less-polluting engines gained this additional cost for consumers, old motorhomes that are far less eco-friendly were exempt from this change. This meant that consumers looking to buy new motorhomes were being incorrectly punished. Thankfully common sense prevailed.
As you may remember, there was a large campaign fronted by the NCC to revert these changes as soon as they were announced. The petition received over 14,000 signatures and was backed by 85 MPs. It resulted in a successful campaign that saw the VED tax increase being reverted. This means that brand new motorhomes can be bought at £1,870 less than previously advertised – great news for consumers looking to purchase a new motorhome.
